I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…if you love music and dancing, this band is a must-see. They cover everything from Journey to Lady Gaga and everything in between. Voted Detroit’s Best Local Band, they always put on a great show. And now, they have even more fans as my friend from Cleveland was in town and was instantly hooked by their stage presence, performance, musicality and, well, overall coolness.
Closing down the place, I left arm-in-arm with my friends and family, rubbing my poor cheeks that hurt from smiling so much and I thought to myself, "What did I do to deserve this?" Surrounded by fabulous people, enjoying a wonderful night, and being made to feel like a rock star….It was beyond words. I must have done something right though, because for those few precious hours, life was perfect.
The more I thought about it, the more I am convinced of the truth of the Golden Rule. Some people call it Karma. I like to put positive energy out there, and do and say things to others as I would want done or said to me. The older I get, the more I realize this very important concept to be true. I’ve seen it time and time again in my life. With friends, with family, with acquaintances…that age-old saying coming to fruition: What goes around, comes around.
Wikipedia defines karma as “not punishment or retribution but simply an extended expression or consequence of natural acts. Karma means 'deed' or 'act' and more broadly names the universal principle of cause and effect, action and reaction that governs all life. The effects experienced are also able to be mitigated by actions and are not necessarily fated. That is to say, a particular action now is not binding to some particular, pre-determined future experience or reaction; it is not a simple, one-to-one correspondence of reward or punishment.”
It also goes onto say that “Karma is not fate, for humans act with free will creating their own destiny. According to the Vedas, if one sows goodness, one will reap goodness; if one sows evil, one will reap evil.”
This concept is universal. Non-Christian religions, Christian religions and various cultures from all over the world including Egypt, India, Greece and China, all have some form of this belief… This concept of the Golden Rule. Again, according to Wikipedia, “The Golden Rule is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights, in which each individual has a right to just treatment, and a reciprocal responsibility to ensure justice for others. A key element of the Golden Rule is that a person attempting to live by this rule treats all people with consideration, not just members of his or her group…The common English phrasing is ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.”
The next morning, as I sat on my couch enjoying my cup of coffee with friends and laughing over the previous night’s events, I knew that it truly was a gift… A gift of positive energy coming back to me.
It’s a simple way of life really. The next time you are in a situation (any situation at all) consider how you would want to be spoken too. Consider what words, emotions or touch you would like to experience. What goes around, comes around. It may not happen when you want it too. It may not happen in the way you think it should…but eventually, the universe has a way of evening things up. Trust me on this.
Whew. I got a little heavy there for a minute! (Deep Thoughts, by Julie.) So now, I'd like to say thank you to all of the wonderful people who helped celebrate my birthday all weekend. (After all, one day is just not enough!) I say thank you to the KILLER FLAMINGOS for being so awesome. And, I say thank you to all of my readers, who, for whatever reason, keep coming back! May karma reward you with all of the goodness and happiness you truly deserve! Now what do ya say we kick back with a cup of joe and share a few laughs?
